Inverted City Monument
This is a collaboration of architecture with archaeological stratigraphy and that engenders a monument for place and memory.
The law of superposition in archaeological stratigraphy bears a strong resemblance to the layering in architecture. Through thousands of years, the layers of the stratum are stacked and transpressed, forming a huge historical cultural section. Remains in stratum break through the boundaries between layers and layers, bringing the past to the present.
Superposition
The archaeological statum is created by accumulating previous cultural layers. The superposition principle refIects on both geological remains and accumulations of human cultural activities. Geographically, the city walls enclose the city's boundaries of three dynasties. This project's site is located right in the center of the overlapping city wall boundaries.

Squeezing Space
As gradually moving to the underground, the fIoors went from separation to squeezing.Three types of spatial forms overlapped upon each other through the connection of city walls. The site is like an excavated archeological site, carrying people's memories of rough history. The inverted city wall of liight echoes the distant remains. Through a typological analysis of the Nanjing City Wall, different spatial forms applicable to sectional design were summarized. The spatial elements, such as stairs, platforms, and walls, were structurally reorganized to achieve spatial overlap.
Memory Strata
As you stroll through the site, it resembles an excavated archaeological ruin, carrying centuries of historical memory. The inverted city wall, with its skylight wells, intertwines ancient relics with modern light and shadows, guiding you deeper into the museum.

Dissociation 游离
As you descend to the underground level, the floating floor slabs appear like fragments of memory, drifting within the space. Massive beams of light, scaled to the height of the city walls, draw visitors into an otherworldly state, inviting them to engage with history and offering an immersive spatial experience. At the same time, towering walls emerge from deeper within, urging visitors to continue their downward exploration.
Touchment 触碰
As one moves further down, the floorboards gradually interlock, and the space begins to expand, resembling a tranquil abyss. The light is soft, filtering through skylights, gently illuminating the surroundings without sharp contrasts, creating an atmosphere of calm and serenity. There is no noise, only subtle shifts of light and shadow, as if time has come to a standstill. The floor is smooth, and the walls are simple yet sturdy, with an air of historical depth that permeates the space.

Extrusion 挤压
As you reach the deepest part of the space, the walls begin to compress, creating a labyrinthine maze. The atmosphere here is filled with a sense of calm and reflection, while also evoking a slight sense of confusion and disorientation, sparking curiosity for the unknown. Each step feels like traversing the traces of history, offering a profound sense of immersion.
