Resonance 共振

The ILLUMANATE Sustainable Living Building Challenge, initiated by the Living Future Institute of Australia, is a heritage building retrofit design competition. At its core is the Living Building Challenge (LBC), a certification program, advocacy tool, and philosophy that sets the highest standards for sustainability in the built environment. The LBC is organized into seven key performance areas: Place, Water, Energy, Health and Happiness, Materials, Equity, and Beauty.

The design of Resonance primarily focuses on the adaptive reuse of a heritage building located in Sunshine North, Melbourne. The project aims to transform the lower-value areas of the building's interior while preserving its heritage elements, and to reshape public social spaces that are needed by the surrounding community. The design takes into account the diverse cultural groups in Australia, including local Aboriginal communities and their unique cultural elements, with the goal of creating an inclusive and welcoming architectural space for all, fostering cultural exchange and community integration.

Breathable Interior Spaces

The original building, completed in 1972, is designed in the Brutalist style, characterized by clean horizontal lines and dominant board-marked off-form concrete, giving it a strong sense of order. The focus of this design is the transformation and revitalization of the building's interior spaces. We aim to repurpose the structure into a multifunctional community hub, incorporating a range of spaces for childcare, commercial, educational, office, and creative purposes. This approach not only addresses the diverse needs of the community but also preserves and reuses the building's original structure and spatial value. To address the lighting challenges within the interior, we have introduced a series of engaging skylights into the roof and partially removed floor slabs to create double-height spaces. This allows natural light, fresh air, and greenery to penetrate the building, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor environments.

Boxes of Light

We have integrated a variety of glass boxes, focused on light, into the building's roof. These glass structures create vertical passages that guide natural light into the previously dark ground floor. At the same time, they seamlessly connect the activities on the first floor with those on the second floor. The interplay of light and space enhances the spatial experience, infusing the interior with warmth and vitality.

Resonance of the Old and New 新旧共振

In the design, we respect the original building structure, retaining the concrete formwork columns and horizontal textures. The ceiling is designed in a circular shape around these structural columns, expanding outward like ripples on water, imbuing the building with renewed vitality. The floor features a simple terrazzo finish, and circular partitions accentuate the dynamic circular forms, further enhancing the overall design language.
