Superposition Expansion
This renovation project aims to blend modern design with the existing architectural features of the priory, creating a dynamic and multifunctional space. By extending the north-south axis and adding new roads, Doornburg becomes a public urban garden for Maarssen. The building is divided into three areas: the blue section offers a quiet space for retreat, preserving original materials and a sacred atmosphere; the dark red section provides a modern, innovative space for artists and scientists with expansive views; the yellow section is a shared multifunctional space.
The design preserves the historical structure while enhancing flexibility and sustainability through the integration of new and old elements. Wood trusses and a transitional corridor ensure structural independence. Sustainability is addressed with solar panels, louvered facades, geothermal heating, and natural ventilation. The renovation maintains cultural heritage while meeting contemporary needs, offering adaptable space for future functions.
Value Assessment
The starting point is based on three scales. In the urban scale, doornburg’s natural environment have been preserved very well since 18th century. And for today’s use value, it could become the public domain for residents and visitors in Marssen. And for its landscape, forests brings the private atmosphere and grassland provides open view. And our site is a kind inbetween.Could Doornburg become Maarssen’s public urban garden? In the architectural scale, the spiritual value is high in chapels, procession hall. The routing is also more compact in this high value part. Also, the application of plastic number is more highlighted. In contrast you can see the U-shape’s left wing is relatively in low value in these aspects. Can Priory be refurbished and expanded while retaining these value? In the detail scale, for the materialization value, most materials like bricks, are preserved very well. These materials are also in high value when considering Jan de Jong’s principle like noble simplicity for materials. While the use value is low, the structure is complicate and fixed due to the plastic number proportions. Could Priory become more spatial flexible and more sustainable in the future?

Design Dimension
To answer these questions,. First, I try to expand doornburg’s public domain by open the north-south axis with new roads. To raise the accessibility, new extensions will be added from both two directions. And then, what would the extension space look like? First, based on the space value analysis, I demolished the low value wings and add new entrance. Then, based on the plastic number, new volumes also are in a superposition way with different height for different functions. For the detail consideration, I want to follow Jan de Jong’s noble simplicity principle, so I choose wood like CLT panels. But different from the old brick wall, it brings more lightness and modern feeling. Also the large span wood truss brings flexible space which is lack in the original building.
New and Old Contrast
When someone come from the north entrance, they will walk through the forests, and see the modern transparent entrance in front of the whole brick building, they will feel the contrast between old and new.

Exhibition Space
After they walk into it, they will be in this exhibition space which is originally the chapel. The original while bricks and floors are preserved, so space is simple. But you can see the light becomes interesting, not only the sky windows, but also the light from the new entrance, it becomes a more public space, connecting with the outside.
New Entrance from the South
For the others come from the south, they will see a more modern architecture, with transparent façade and light structure. But the volumes between old and new is balanced,in a kind of unity. The ground floor of the new architecture is transparent, so people can see the old building behind it. Makes it interesting.

Double Height Restaurant
when they enter the hall, walk downstairs, they can sit in this double height restaurant, it has the best view of the old courtyard. People can gather in this open courtyard, connecting with the whole park.

Retreat and Artist
Here’s the different floor plans and functions. The blue part is for the retreat people, who need quiet space. The spaces have little changes, I try to preserve the original materials and sacred and simplicity feelings. They can study on the ground floor and live on the first floor. The dark red part is for artists and scientists, who need a more innovative and modern space, they can have mor touch with the outside and have wide view. The yellow part is sharing space for multi use.

New and Old Section
The section shows the connection between the old and new. Left is the new south entrance with the wood truss system, on the right is the original floors. In the middle is the transition corridor, it’s also a self-support structural box to make the left truss stable, and make the new structure actually separate from the old ones. Here are the details, the one in color is the original structure. I keep the old structures and add ceilings to hide water and ventilation pipes.
